The Business of Torture
The European Court of Human Rights agreed yesterday - more than two years after the applications have been filed - to hear six cases filed by Chechens against Russia. The claimants accuse the Russian military of torture and indiscriminate killings. The Court has ruled in the past against the Russian Federation and awarded assorted plaintiffs thousands of euros per case in compensation.
As awareness of human rights increased, as their definition expanded and as new, often authoritarian polities, resorted to torture and repression - human rights advocates and non-governmental organizations proliferated. Taping for TV prompts new-trial order; Appeals court rules on case involving Quincy man’s murder (Patriot Ledger)
In a ruling that could prompt challenges of more convictions in Boston cases, the state Appeals Court has ordered a new trial for two brothers convicted of killing a Quincy man because their attorneys allowed a television crew to tape confidential conversations with the defendants during their 1999 trial.
Judge denies Brown a new trial (Delta Democrat Times)
GREENVILLE - Circuit Court Judge Richard Smith denied King Young Brown Jr.'s quest for a new trial. He also denied all, but one of several other motions made from attorneys involved in the Brown case.
